The
Castroville Public Library
began operation in 1963, and was the first public library in Medina
County. Credit for making a dream become a reality goes to the local
Home Demonstration Club. From a very small beginning, a full service
library is now available.
While book circulation is the most active
service, magazines, videos and audio tapes are available. New
computers equipped with CD-ROM drives and programs such as Microsoft
Office 2007 are available for use. The computers are also on-line
and linked to the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries for further
research. As a member of the Alamo Area Library system, the library
takes part in 3 regular rotating circuits which include the books on
Tape, Spanish language and Large Print Materials. This system also
allows them to "borrow" books, audio and video cassettes. There is also
a genealogy section which consists of an extensive collection of
information on Medina County residents. The Oral History Collection
provides an invaluable source of unwritten history.
Tapes may be listened to anytime during regular
library hours. Some of the tapes have been transcribed. Also
included in available materials is a large collection on the past,
present and future of Texas and Texans.
The original library, which had been in use for
25 years, became too small to meet present-day needs. In April 1985,
the Castroville Area Chamber of Commerce purchased two lots from the
Sisters of Divine Providence for a Library/Chamber of Commerce
building. The Chamber of Commerce is currently located at the
Steinbach House.
The building was built with monies from
donations and fund-raisers. The generosity of the area citizens and
the Chamber of Commerce has been outstanding. Funding is still
continuing for collection expansion. The library staff invites
visitors to stop by the library at 802 London Street. The library can
be contacted by calling 830-931-4095, fax 830-931-9050. A meeting
room is available for local community groups. Please call ahead for
policy and scheduling. |
