Chartered July 11, 2000 as a non-profit
501c3, Castroville Conservation Society was formed to preserve,
support and encourage preservation of Castroville’s unique
history, architecture, archeological and natural sites.
Among the Society’s educational, historic
and civic projects are student art celebrating National Historic
Preservation Month, Witte Museum Plays depicting diverse Texas
cultures, a senior scholarship for history, architecture or
archeology major and WWII & Korean Veterans oral history.
Long-term
projects & gifts to the City Castroville are: $2,500 donation
for the acquisition/restoration of the Biry Home, and the
amendment to the 1970 National Register District of Castroville
to include the period of the 20th century significance, support
for Castroville’s 4th of July Parade and Castroville May Days,
and a letter for the Preserve America Designation. In August of
2002, CCS hosted a tour of Castroville, luncheon and forum for a
group from The National Alliance of Historic Commissions.
The Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner honors
outstanding preservation achievements. An August workshop
discusses timely preservation issues. The Public is invited and
membership is open to interested persons.
The Society’s projects are funded by dues,
donations and the generosity of members and friends opening
their historic homes for the Christmas Candlelight Open House.
Castroville Conservation Society is indebted to our role
model, the San Antonio Conservation Society and to Texas
Historic Commission, National Trust for Historic Preservation
and Preservation Texas for their invaluable guidance in helping
protect Castroville’s "A Sense Of Place."
