Records
of the Castro Garden Club, formed in 1952, state its purpose:
"To
beautify the city and encourage growing plants to enhance the Alsatian
atmosphere." |

Throughout
the years, through pilgrimages and tours,
special workshops and programs,
special civic projects and community involvement, dedicated club
members have
enabled the club to far exceed its goals.
A major club
project is the beautification and care of Houston and September
Squares. The Club lends its expertise to other landscaping
projects, i.e., the Regional Park, the Library, the Post Office
and other
business places. Trees have been planted at schools, at the
cemeteries and in other areas. Members have assisted the Chamber
of Commerce in
several of their projects and have encouraged the "Keep
Castroville Beautiful Committee" projects and the fight against
litter.

The Club sponsors
a Yard of the Month Program to recognize the outstanding yards
of businesses and homes in Castroville.
Workshops and
programs throughout the club year contain a wealth of
information on gardening subjects and most are open to the
public. The club welcomes new members.
The Castro Garden
Club has sponsored many pilgrimages of the old homes. In recent
years, the Club gives small tours to interested groups
visiting Castroville.
Following certain criteria, homes on tours and
pilgrimages are awarded
historical markers—Pioneer Castroville Home (PCH) Markers to
homes built before 1875, Special Castroville Home (SCH) Markers
to replica homes or those built after 1875.

In 1994, the club
consolidated its information on the old homes and published
"Pioneer Castroville Homes." The book contains articles on over
55 of the old homes with accompanying line drawings by artist
Lorna Francis.
